Senior golfer Justin Ahasic wins the Anteater Invitational

MEN'S GOLF

Anteater Invitational

Senior Justin Ahasic's three-round total of 213 was good enough for medallist honors, as the Broncos finished fifth out of 10 teams in the Anteater Invitational last Tuesday. Ahasic became the first Bronco to earn medallist honors twice in the same season. Other players of note include sophomore Michael Nicoletti who finished in 20th place and teammate Jong Yoon who finished in a tie for 23rd place at the Invitational.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Saint Mary's 70, Santa Clara 40

The Broncos fell to 5-7 in WCC play and 13-14 overall after last Saturday's game at the Leavey Center. Junior guard Doron Perkins led the squad with 12 points and five rebounds, while sophomore forward Travis Niesen added nine points. The Broncos prepare for the WCC Tournament by traveling this weekend for games against Portland on Thursday and Gonzaga on Saturday.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Santa Clara 85, San Diego 56

Santa Clara (8-16 overall, 4-7 WCC) took down the Toreros last Thursday at the Leavey Center to complete the season sweep of San Diego. Freshman guard Ashley Graham finished with 16 points, nine assists and five steals. Senior guard Whitney Sutak dropped in 14 points, while junior guard Quinn Thomas netted 13 and senior forward Jennie Rondel finished with 10 points on the night.

Saint Mary's 74, Santa Clara 60

Rondel's career-high 20-point performance wasn't quite enough for the Broncos who dropped the conference contest last Saturday in Moraga. Sutak dropped in 11 points and added four rebounds for Santa Clara, whose record fell to 8-17 overall and 4-8 in WCC play. The team will return to the Leavey Center this weekend to host Gonzaga on Thursday and Portland on Saturday, wrapping up the regular season.

BASEBALL

Washington State 5, Santa Clara 3

Senior pitcher Chad Fillinger allowed only three earned runs in five and one-third innings, but the Broncos (5-4 overall) dropped the opener in the River City Classic last Friday in Sacramento. Sophomore infielder Michael Thompson was 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. Washington State transfer Dustin Realini went 2-for-4 against his old squad with a run scored.

Cal Poly 12, Santa Clara 4

The Broncos dropped to 5-5 overall as they continued action at the River City Classic in Sacramento. Freshman outfielder Nathan Faulkner was 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and junior outfielder Nic Crosta went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore pitcher Andrew Slorp picked up the loss for Santa Clara.

Santa Clara 5, Saint Mary's 3

The Broncos wrapped up action in the River City Classic with a win on Sunday against the Gaels. With the teams tied 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Faulkner delivered a pinch-hit two-run homer to give the Broncos the lead. Junior reliever Anthony Rea came in to close the game in the ninth, picking up his second save on the year. Crosta, Michael Thompson and sophomore shortstop Michael Lange all had impressive days at the plate, all finishing an identical 2-for-4 at the plate.

Santa Clara 8, Pacific 3

Santa Clara (7-5 overall) batted around to score all of their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to claim the victory last Tuesday at Buck Shaw Stadium. Junior Nic Crosta and sophomore infielder Dustin Realini each had two hits in the ball game, and first baseman Will Thompson drove in two runners. Senior hurler John Redmond picked up the win in relief to move to 2-0 on the season. The team returns to action this weekend for a road series against Cal Poly before the home-away-home series against the San Jose State Spartans.

MEN'S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, Santa Clara 3

After getting swept in doubles action, the Broncos split the singles matches with UC Irvine to drop the close non-conference match. Junior Taylor Bedilion earned an impressive 6-0, 6-4 victory at the No. 2 singles position, while fellow junior Francisco Zepponi came from behind to earn a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 singles spot. Freshman Kevin McQuaid claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 6 singles position. The team returns home this weekend to host Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary's.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Wyoming 4, Santa Clara 3

The Broncos fell to 2-4 overall after dropping a tight non-conference match last Saturday in Portland. The Cowgirls won two of the three doubles matches to pick up the doubles point and the two teams split the singles matches. Junior Janalle Kaloi picked up a 2-6, 7-6, 7-5 victory at the No. 1 singles spot while sophomore Casey Knutson and freshman Kimberly Daniel each won in straight sets.

Santa Clara 4, Portland 3

The Broncos improved to 2-0 in conference play with last Sunday's victory against the Pilots. Santa Clara was swept in doubles play, but the Broncos won four of the six singles matches to claim the victory. Kaloi, Daniel and sophomore Nicole Jackson all earned impressive straight-set wins while freshman Kelly Leathers valiantly came from behind to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. The team returns home this weekend to host Saint Mary's and UC Santa Barbara.

WOMEN'S WATER POLO

Arizona State 10, Santa Clara 2

Santa Clara opened up action in the Davis Shootout with a loss to the Sun Devils of Arizona State on Saturday. Junior Catherine Flynn and sophomore Kathleen Hamm were the goal scorers for the Broncos, while senior Anne Ginotti recorded four saves in goal.

Santa Clara 10, Pacific 8

Santa Clara improved their record to 7-6 on the season after picking up a victory Saturday afternoon against the Tigers. Sophomore Alanna Simpkins led all goal scorers with three, while Flynn and Hamm each netted two. Junior Katy Shumm had one goal and five assists and Ginotti led the defensive effort with seven blocks in goal.

CS Northridge 5, Santa Clara 1

Ginotti had 12 saves, but the Broncos were unable to pick up the victory in Sunday's action at the Davis Shootout. Flynn scored the only goal for Santa Clara, whose record fell to 7-7 on the season.

UC Davis 11, Santa Clara 2

The Broncos dropped their second contest of the day to close out the Davis Shootout. Flynn and Hamm each had a goal and two kickouts, but the loss drops Santa Clara's overall record to 7-8 on the year. Freshman Kristin Barnes recorded nine saves and three steals in goal. The team host will Sonoma State this Sunday at the Leavey Pool.
