Softball sweeps four-game series against Saint Mary's

SOFTBALL

Santa Clara 4, Saint Mary's 3

Senior pitcher Jaime Forman-Lau went the distance to pick up her 17th victory on the season as the Broncos won the early game of the doubleheader last Saturday at Marsalli Park. Sophomore leadoff hitter Jenny Brown was 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored, two walks and a solo home run. Senior Rachel Sherman went a perfect 3-for-3. Forman-Lau also had two base hits and one RBI.

Santa Clara 6, Saint Mary's 2

Brown and Sherman continued their excellent days at the plate, as the Broncos picked up the win in game two of the doubleheader. Brown went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and Sherman went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a solo home run. Sophomore shortstop Shannon Linerud was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and sophomore Liz Courter pitched a complete game to earn the win.

Santa Clara 10, Saint Mary's 0

Sophomore Jessica Clee was 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs, four RBI and a home run as the Broncos cruised to the win in the first game of last Sunday's doubleheader. Forman-Lau picked up the win and padded the lead by hitting a solo home run. Brown was 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, and Courter was also 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored.

Santa Clara 4, Saint Mary's 1

The Broncos picked up their fourth consecutive victory against the Lions, as they improved their record to 21-23 overall, 7-4 in conference. Forman-Lau picked up her second complete-game victory of the day, striking out 11 batters. Sherman continued her hot streak with another 3-for-3 game, including a home run. Linerud was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and one RBI, while Brown went 2-for-3. The Broncos will travel to San Diego this weekend.

BASEBALL

Loyola Marymount 8, Santa Clara 0

The Broncos dropped the first game of their weekend series last Friday. Santa Clara managed only four base hits in the game, while senior pitcher Chad Fillinger threw six innings and struck out seven Lions hitters. Freshman pitcher Scott Lonergan only allowed one run in three innings of relief.

Santa Clara 7, Loyola Marymount 5

Freshman outfielder Robert Perry's two-run, eighth-inning blast broke open a tied ball game to lead the Broncos to the conference win. Perry was 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored, while junior Nic Crosta was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI. Junior Thomas Van Buskirk picked up the win in relief to move his record to 4-1, while junior Anthony Rea picked up his 10th save of the year.

Loyola Marymount 12, Santa Clara 7

The Lions rallied for eight runs in the sixth inning to come back from a 7-1 deficit and win the rubber game in the weekend series at Buck Shaw. Junior infielder Will Thompson was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored. Junior Ryan Chiarelli continued his hitting clinic with a 3-for-4 game with three runs scored. The Broncos (17-22 overall, 6-9 WCC) will return to the diamond to take on Saint Mary's this weekend at Buck Shaw.

MEN'S CREW

LMU Invitational

The varsity eight-man boat of Juan Perez, Nick Bickes, John Zevenbergen, Bryce Davidson, Justin Ungson, Ned Matthews, Mike Rhoads, Ben Johnson and Alex Nickel defeated USC by less than one second to highlight the team's efforts in Marina Del Ray last Saturday.

MEN'S GOLF

U.S. Intercollegiate

The Broncos finished 18th out of 19 teams to conclude their season at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Palo Alto last Sunday. Sophomore Michael Nicoletti was 9-over-par to finish in a tie for 36th place, while freshman Jong Yoon was 12-over-par for the tournament.

MEN'S TENNIS

Pacific 5, Santa Clara 2

The Broncos dropped the non-conference match-up last Thursday in Stockton. After losing all three of the doubles matches to lose the doubles point, Santa Clara won two singles matches. Junior Francisco Zepponi won a 6-4, 3-6 (10-6) match at the No. 4 singles spot and freshman Bobby Rasmussen claimed a straight-set 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.

Santa Clara 6, Saint Mary's 1

The Broncos capped off the regular season with an impressive conference road victory against the Gaels to advance their record to 10-12. Santa Clara won two out of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches. The win was highlighted by freshman Kevin McQuaid's 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles and Zepponi's 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles. The team looks forward to the WCC Championships this weekend in Santa Clara.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Santa Clara 5, San Francisco 2

The Broncos added a win with their victory against the Dons last Friday. Freshmen Kelly Leathers and Kimberly Daniel each had straight-set victories to highlight the match. Leathers won at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-2 and Daniel won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 singles spot. The No. 1 doubles team of Janalle Kaloi and Catherine Cochrane won their match by a score of 8-6.

Saint Mary's 5, Santa Clara 2

Junior Janalle Kaloi had an impressive 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles, but the Broncos were unable to defeat the Gaels, dropping their record to 11-10 overall and 5-3 in conference. Daniel earned a hard-fought 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win at the No. 4 singles spot to pick up Santa Clara's other point of the match. The team will compete in the WCC Championships this weekend in Moraga.

WOMEN'S WATER POLO

Santa Clara 9, Cal State Hayward 3

Junior Catherine Flynn netted three goals as the Broncos improved to 18-15 on the season last Saturday in Hayward. Sophomore Bryn Asher had an excellent all-around game with two goals and five steals, while senior Anne Ginotti got 13 blocks in goal to anchor the defense.
