Support for 'Vagina'
By Our Opinion
We've heard it before. People are sick of "The Vagina Monologues."
While the debate hasn't changed much this year, the effort put together by the group of people working to put on "The Vagina Monologues" shows admirable dedication.
This year's producers of "Monologues" feared similar issues as in past years. Still, they wanted to produce the play -- even if it meant taking it off campus.
Why the university remains so adamantly opposed to the production of this play is unclear. The play does present a feminist perspective, but one may ask, what is wrong with that?
Its goal in production is to raise money to stop violence against women. This does not seem like a perspective that needs explanation.
Even if someone does not agree with the feminist means this play uses to make its point, we would at least ask that the university could accept that these are vehicles of expression that the students in the play believe to be effective.
In an institution of inclusive excellence, silencing the voices of these students is stifling, both creatively and progressively.
Perhaps in years to come the university and students can work together better to make their creative products an expression of passionate activism and support. Perhaps there will be a new theatrical expression like "The Vagina Monologues." But until then, we call for supporting the students who worked so hard to put on the production this year.
