The lost art of tailgating

By Chris Furnari

What happened to tailgating?

Tailgating has never officially existed at Santa Clara. During the football days, students used to occasionally plan events, but most took place at various off-campus houses, much like current pre-game rituals.

Santa Clara students are missing a crucial part of their college experience because there is no longer a Bronco football team.

But while tailgating is most commonly done before football games, I wish Bronco fans would come together before other sporting events on campus.

There are plenty of spaces in the Leavey parking lot and plenty of students going to sporting events. There is only one part of the equation missing -- the barbecues.

It's time Bronco fans stepped up and organized a school-wide tailgate party before a soccer, basketball or baseball game.

For those who haven't been tailgating in a while, fear not. Here is a list of things you will need for the optimum tailgating experience:

Participants. This is an essential piece of the puzzle. Without the fans, there would be no pre-game celebration. Start a Facebook group, pitch the idea to the athletic department, contact alumni, do whatever it takes to get people tailgating.

Grills. No, I am not referring to the ones that Nelly raps about, but rather the kind used for barbecuing an assortment of meats. Throw it in the bed of a truck and head to the party. Just make sure it's cleaned before use.

Food. Head to Costco and pick up a big package of chicken breasts, a sleeve of burger patties and some Ball Park Franks. Don't forget the condiments and any necessary utensils.

Beer. What's a tailgate party without the proper refreshment? Pack your ice chest with enough drinks to go around, and celebrate the red and white of Santa Clara the right way.

Spirit. Don't even think about tailgating unless you're wearing at least a Ruff Rider T-shirt. Otherwise, red and white are requirements, face paint is encouraged and rally chants should be performed early and often.

These five elements should be enough to get your tailgating experience started. Everyone is of course free to make any changes or additions to this short list, so long as it is in good taste.

While the Broncos may not be able to celebrate a powerful football team, we can still acknowledge the existence of our fútbol team (or any other team for that matter).

Happy tailgating.
