The Santa Clara Receives national recognition from Associated College Press
The Santa Clara was named a finalist in the 2001 Newspaper Pacemaker competition, the top national honor for student publications.
Presented at the Annual Convention of College Media Advisors/Associated College Press in New Orleans, La. over the weekend, the event marked the fifth time in the last seven years that The Santa Clara has been named a finalist.
First awarded in 1935, the Pacemaker is based on "coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics."
This year's competition was judged by The Times-Picayune of New Orleans.
Two Santa Clara graduates also earned individual recognition at the national convention. Former News Editor Jennifer Kanne of the class of 2001 won first place in the Business and Economic Reporting competition for her story on student debt. And former Editor in Chief Joe Tone of the class of 2001 placed third in the national Story of the Year contest sponsored by the Los Angeles Times for his story examining Santa Clara student D.J. Frandsen's battle to overcome cancer.
