The Environmental Protection Agency has recognized Santa Clara for the third year in a row as the Individual Conference Champion in the west coast for the College and University Green Challenge.
The award is given to the school based on the amount of green power that is purchased. Santa Clara used more than 30 million kilo-watts of green energy, equivalent to 100 percent of the school's electricity usage. According to the EPA, this is the same as avoiding the carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of 30 thousand homes.
Thirty-one collegiate conferences and 69 schools competed in the challenge, collectively purchasing nearly 1.6 billion kWh of green power.
