Water polo season off to rough start

By DAVID DUNCH

The women's water polo team dropped its first two games of the season last weekend, getting pounded 16-2 by San Jose State before falling to UC Santa Cruz in overtime 8-7.

In their first game against the Spartans, junior Kim Yost and freshman Carly Carpenter were the only Broncos to score a goal as they each found the back of the net. That was about the only thing that went right for the team.

The Broncos' next game proved to be a little more successful, although the final result was still a loss. Senior Regina Dinneen, who scored three goals, led the way. Freshmen Becky Hong, Kelley Mays and Ashley Alpers each contributed a goal, as did sophomore Katrina Osland.

Even with the two losses, senior Lara Williams is excited about the season.

"This is a good team," Williams said. "We have a lot of talented, experienced players coming back from last year and we have an amazing freshman class. This is going to be a fun year."

Hopefully, you can see the team in action this weekend as they face UC Davis at the Leavey Pool Sunday at 1 p.m. There is a chance, though, that the Aggies may have to back out of the contest because of scheduling conflicts.
