Santa Clara University women’s basketball beat the 2025 WCC regular season champions, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, 77-73 on Sunday at the Leavey Center.

Both teams now have a 3-1 WCC record. The Broncos sit second in the WCC standings.

The Broncos took the lead late in the first quarter and didn’t give it up the rest of the game. At half-time, they were up 39-34.

Gonzaga made a layup with three minutes and 40 seconds left in the game to bring the Zags within one point of the Broncos. Gonzaga called a timeout where Santa Clara head coach Loree Payne reassured her team saying, “we got this.”

They stayed the course and pulled away with a layup from Maia Jones ’26 and made free throws by grad student guard Ashley Hawkins and Ava Schmidt ’27.

Hawkins recorded a points-assists double-double with 16 points while shooting 5-14 from the field. Kylee Fox ’27 and Sophie Glancey ’28 scored 17, and Jones scored 15.

Next up: The Broncos play away at University of San Francisco on Thursday at 6 p.m on ESPN+.
