For the first time since 2000, Santa Clara defeated West Coast Conference rival Gonzaga at home, winning 85-71on Thursday night in front of a packed crowd at the Leavey Center.

Red-shirt sophomore Kevin Foster led the team with a career high 36 points including hitting 6-14 three pointers. The win was the first for Santa Clara Head Coach Kerry Keating, who is 1-8 against the Bulldogs, and means that he has now defeated every team in the WCC. 

Keating has the potential to turn Santa Clara into a nationally-recognized mid-major program; he's a great recruiter and willing to schedule big-name programs. However, with No. 21 Saint Mary's on the rise and No. 9 BYU joining the WCC next year, it is going to take more than talent to win this conference.

A shaky start for Santa Clara's women's basketball has not extinguished the team's goal to finish in the top half of the West Coast Conference. With the WCC as competitive as it is, the Broncos are applying everything they learned from their difficult pre-season games to prepare for conference play.

Smile, you just lost the BCS National Championship game. Sounds strange, right? Well it wraps up how Duck quarterback Darron Thomas approached the heartbreaking loss dealt to his team by the Auburn Tigers.

Normally, I would expect a blank face, possibly even the brief falling of tears, especially from a quarterback, a team leader.

What initially seemed like a sure win for Santa Clara transformed into desperation for the Broncos Saturday night. Racing back in the final minutes of the game, Santa Clara fought to start West Coast Conference play with a winning record, but the University of San Francisco prevailed 74-67.
