Food 4 Thought: The Hut

Located steps away from Santa Clara University’s campus, The Hut offers students a convenient place to grab food and drinks, or socialize with friends. With a mix of smoked meats, shareable appetizers and cocktails, the restaurant provides more than a typical on-campus meal.
The Hut describes itself as a place for “family time or game time,” positioning the restaurant as both a casual dining spot and a community gathering place. Beyond its staple menu items, the restaurant also offers delivery, pickup, catering and private event bookings through its website.
The menu reflects the restaurant’s casual, group-friendly atmosphere, with many dishes designed for sharing. Appetizers include fried pickle chips, fries, buffalo cauliflower, mac and cheese, mozzarella sticks, onion rings, and chips and guacamole, ranging from $10 to $18.
“My favorite food item is the pickle chips because they’re unique,” said Natalie Hanna ’26. “Not a lot of places have that and they give good portions.”
For smaller portions, the restaurant also offers tacos priced at $3.50 each, with chicken, pork, tri-tip or buffalo cauliflower filling options.
The higher price of the shareable dishes makes them better suited for groups than individual diners. While the portions work well when split among friends, the overall cost can rise quickly once additional food and drinks are ordered.
During my visit, I ordered the pickle chips, buffalo cauliflower and one of the featured cocktails. All three stood out for their flavor, though I wished the restaurant offered smaller portion sizes in addition to its larger shareable plates.
The group-oriented format remains one of The Hut’s strengths. Others at my table ordered individual entrees, including the Cinco de Mayo special birria tacos, and praised both the portion sizes and flavor, though several still felt the prices were high. The holiday special was also advertised with additional items, including traditional consommé, which our table did not order.
Our table also ordered three featured cocktails, though the strength of the drinks varied noticeably between orders. Drink responsibly when visiting.
The Hut also emphasizes smoked meats and barbecue-style offerings, with a sandwich and burger menu featuring pulled pork, pulled chicken, tri-tip, bacon and fried chicken. Sandwiches range from $12 to $16, while burgers start at $11. Diners can customize their burgers by selecting meats, vegetables, cheeses and sauces, and plant-based Beyond Burgers are available as an alternative for non-meat eaters.
“I normally get the 1/3 pound burger with a side of fries and hut sauce,” said Avalon Dela Rosa ’26. “To drink, I’ll either get a lavender lemonade or a Stella Artois.”
The Hut’s cocktail menu is divided into four categories: “Sweet & Savory,” “House Cocktails,” “Classic Cocktails” and “Mules & Bucks,” with most drinks priced between $10 and $13, and some slightly higher.
Beyond cocktails, the drink menu includes beer and wine ranging from $4 to $12, along with nonalcoholic options such as soda, lemonade, iced tea and coffee. The full drink list is available on The Hut’s website.
“I really liked the Santa Clarita frozen margarita they had for a limited time,” said Johnny Maechling ’27. “I love margaritas, and the mix of the orange and slushy was perfect.”
Although The Hut draws crowds for late-night gatherings, Saturday brunch is also a popular option. It runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with bottomless mimosas served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.
“My favorite time to go is Saturday mornings for bottomless mimosas,” said Hanna. “It’s fun for a big group, and you can bring all your friends.”
Beyond the food and drinks, students often point to The Hut’s friendly atmosphere as a key reason they return. Its bar-and-restaurant setup makes it flexible for different groups, including those under 21 who still come for meals and socializing.
“I like The Hut because it’s very close to campus and many students go there,” said Lexi Stranutu ’26. “The employees are really nice and friendly, and the vibes are always good.”
The Hut also hosts weekly trivia nights, further contributing to its social environment. This past year, trivia was held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. during the fall and winter quarters.
“Trivia is always fun,” said Amelia Cole ’27. “As long as you get there about an hour early to get a table.”
With its shareable menu, cocktails, weekend brunch and social atmosphere just steps from campus, The Hut has grown into more than a place to eat. For many students, it serves as a casual gathering spot where running into familiar faces is part of the experience.
