Santa Clara and SCPD look into alleged sexual assault

Last week, a Santa Clara student reported an alleged sexual assault to the Santa Clara Police Department. According to an advisory issued by Campus Safety, "The assault took place a few blocks off campus and occurred after the student left a residence and began to return to campus. The police are actively investigating this reported crime and the University is supporting the victim."

At this point, local police are not releasing any further information, but have stated that the case is an isolated event, and not indicative of a trend. The police expect to complete their investigation within the next few days, says spokesperson Sgt. Ray Carrera. The victim's resident director chose not to comment on the case.

Phil Beltran, Director of Campus Safety, reminds students "t0 remember to walk with others, be aware of their surroundings and the time of night, accept beverages only from persons that are known and trustworthy and call 911 whenever circumstances warrant a police notification because of a suspicious person(s) or behavior."
