Startup expo to offer career opportunities for students
By Staff reports
On Feb. 22, Santa Clara students will enjoy a unique opportunity to join some of Silicon Valley's best startups. Over 70 startups are planning to attend the first annual Career Center sponsored event called the Startup Expo. It will be put on by members of the Santa Clara Entrepreneurs Organization and Center of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and takes place in Benson Memorial Center from 5:30 — 7:30 p.m.
Any intern who is a part of the startup will get to see how businesses work at a fundamental level. Startups are not just resume boosters; they will require interns to quickly adapt and learn new skills. The people who begin startups are extremely enthusiastic and very good at what they do. Unlike filing paperwork at larger firms, an intern at a startup will actually do something that matters to the survival of the firm.
Also unlike working at a larger firm, interns are not stuck in a specific position at a startup. Kathy King, one of the principle organizers for Startup Expo, began working at Inadco as a Marketing Intern, but as the year progressed she began to realize that she was not as interested in marketing as she initially thought. She was able to easily switch and become a Finance intern because the CFO was only one cubicle away from her.
As the job market becomes more and more globalized it will only get harder to get some of the most elusive jobs. Students who have two or more internships are significantly ahead of their peers who have little to no work experience.
