In late August, Santa Clara University announced that Dan Coonan, who took over as Director of Athletics and Recreation on August 27, 2004, had signed a five-year extension to remain in the position through the summer of 2015. Homesick for freshmen dorms?
I am homesick. Not for my hometown, but for my home all of freshman year: ninth floor Swig. I miss the tiny rooms. I miss the always dirty study lounge. I miss the long elevator rides. But most of all, I miss the people. That floor in Swig became my home; those people became my family.
New degree certificate added for engineering graduates
Santa Clara University's School of Engineering is now offering a Renewable Energy Certificate for engineering graduate students. The certificate helps engineers in the semiconductor field prepare for one of the fastest growing sectors in world-alternative energy.
Catfish: mysterious, gripping and riveting
"Don't let anyone tell you what it is." This succinct tagline for the internet-centric documentary "Catfish" very accurately sums up the appeal of this surprising film. The less you know about it, the better, which makes this a difficult review to write. In case the tagline and that last sentence weren't clear enough, this entire review will essentially be, in some way, a spoiler.
Remembering Fr. Locatelli
For many students currently enrolled at Santa Clara, the name "Locatelli" is one of legend. People know that he was important, but many are unsure as to why, or what he did during his twenty years serving as president of Santa Clara.
Feet for Families Run/Walk
As temperatures soar this weekend during San Jose's Indian summer, Santa Clara students and families throughout the Bay Area are slipping into their sneakers and heading outside to participate in Aspiranet's Feet for Families fundraiser. The event is a run/walk where participants can choose between attempting a 2.
The Mosque Debated
Recently one of the most controversial issues in the news has concerned the building of an interfaith center known as the Cordoba House just two blocks from Ground Zero, the site of one of the devastating terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. People on both sides of the argument are passionate and convinced of the righteousness of their stance.
First Senate meeting of the year
The student senate met for the first time this past Thursday, their first meeting in the new Locatelli Student Activities Center. Senior Blake Martini was sworn in by Chief Justice Justin Gilio after a unanimous vote of approval by the rest of the senate for him to join the ranks.
Students speak out about the new Benson
Since the staff began serving food there, a buzz has been circling around campus about the new Benson dining hall. Comparisons to the previous dining hall have been made by many as students heatedly discuss whether or not the new system is an improvement over the last.
New de Saisset exhibit celebrates California native cultures
Sing Me Your Story brings together California native artists and poets in a powerful traveling exhibition.
Get focused and begin to "flow"
When my roommate goes to the library, he packs the necessities to endure the visit: headphones, iPod, laptop and laptop charger. Entertainment items far outweigh study materials. Often times upon returning he jokes that zero school work was accomplished, although he discovered some awesome bands he insists I check out.
Vampire Weekend thrills young fans in Berkeley
Vampire Weekend brought a packed audience of die-hard fans to their show at the historic Greek Theatre in Berkeley, September 25. The theatre, located on the UC Berkeley campus, was nearly filled to its 8,500-person capacity during the concert Saturday night, which also featured Beach House and The Very Best as opening acts.
SJSU to host No. 3 Boise St.
For all the interest students at Santa Clara have for the return of football to Mission Campus, it is surprising to me that more people do not take advantage of having a Division I football program right down the street. I'm not talking about Stanford-they seem to get a decent amount of support from students at Santa Clara-but rather San Jose State, who will play Boise State and Fresno State at home this year.
Bronco runners, bringing food to you
When you see the new red tricycles careening through campus carrying steaming bags of Bronco food in their basket, move out of their way; these are no ordinary deliveries! They are the Bronco runners, delivery boys and girls from Bronco Student Services who work hard to bring late night snacks straight from the ovens of the Bronco to the waiting hands of students in their dorm rooms.

Digital dating woes
Sometimes I like to think back to ten years ago, when chatting on AIM was a novelty and text messaging was unheard of. You remember the days of dial-up, when the Internet tied up the phone line and an awkward exchange with a parent stood between you and a phone conversation with your crush? Simpler times.
